Tribute Boxes

These magnificent works of art are a tribute to the Bentwood Boxes created centuries ago. They reflect the ancient traditions and incorporate new ones with the use of modern materials. Different variations include the use of cedar boxes inlaid with sandblasted, kiln-worked and fire-painted glass panels.

“The earliest boxes may have been purely utilitarian, only gradually becoming embellished and highly valued as ceremonial property. From oral tradition, however, it is clear that 19th century bentwood boxes provided a means of cooking, storing food & valuables, and holding the remains of the dead. But, they also provided a symbolic way of thinking by means of the container metaphor”.

As legend has it, “Before the great flood, when animals, trees, birds, and fish on earth did not exist, there lived an old man. He lived on the bank of a river with his only child, a daughter. This was a time when the whole world was dark. The old man had a box that contained another box, which contained an infinite number of boxes. Each one was nestled inside a box slightly larger than itself. Until, finally there was a box so tiny that all it could contain was all the light of the universe.”
